1. Clean the fireplace at least once a year

The NFPA recommends that you clean the entire fireplace system at least once every year. It may make sense to address this at the onset of winter, when you are most likely to use it. Seek the services of a professional to strip off the soot, debris and gunk from the flue and chimney. Remember that you should clean the firebox after every fire.

 

2. Keep flammable materials away from the fireplace

Keep kindling, wood, and matches are at least 3 feet away from the fireplace. Ember ignition is a common source of house fires and should be avoided by all means.

4. Check the damper for proper closure and tightness

6. Inspect the chimney for cracks
